SWK 505 Social Welfare Svcs and Pol II
Social Welfare Services and Policies II (3). This is the second of two sequential courses in the Social Welfare Policy and Services sequence designed to provide opportunities for students to analyze the historical and philosophical development of social welfare and to develop skills in social welfare policy and program analysis, formulation and advocacy. Students learn the relationship of social welfare to the social, political, economic and cultural context in which it exists. Additionally, students learn that policy activities constitute a critical component of the provision of direct services to clients. This sequence emphasizes individuals¿ interdependence in the creation of social policy and promotes students understanding of the process by which such policies are enacted. Students are facilitated in perceiving social policy as an important aspect of professional Social Work practice.
This course introduces students to policy practice with the goal being to change policies in legislative and community settings. Students will also learn to create new policies and improve existing laws and statues. Again, students will work to develop basic policy analysis skills and advocacy skills aimed at empowering vulnerable populations.
