Department of Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is dedicated to the preparation and development of highly qualified educators who are committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and service. The department’s primary objective is to prepare teacher candidates for the education and development of children and youth in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Collaborative/Special Education, and Secondary Education. Through rigorous academic coursework and experiential learning opportunities, candidates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to become effective decision-makers in diverse educational settings.

In alignment with the evolving demands of the education profession, the department also provides a strong foundation for advanced study at the graduate level. Teacher candidates enroll in the College of Education, select a program of study in one of the disciplines, and follow a curriculum approved by the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE). Candidates are advised to consult with their program advisor to review the four-year curriculum guide outlining specific course requirements for their chosen area of specialization.

IMPORTANT: Consult program advisers for four-year curriculum sheet listing the specific courses required within each of the area.
