The Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center Requirement
The College of Education operates a state-of-the-art center which is dedicated to fostering dynamic, engaging, and developmentally appropriate social and educational experiences for young children. This center serves as a premier learning environment for early childhood education while offering undergraduate and graduate candidates hands-on opportunities for observation, research, and experiential learning. Established in 1971 and named in honor of Dr. Zelia Stephens Evans, the center’s first director, the facility has upheld a legacy of excellence in early childhood education. In recognition of its high standards and commitment to quality, the center earned accreditation in 2006 and continues to uphold best practices in the field. Grounded in research-based and innovative approaches, the center integrates modern pedagogical methods, emerging educational technologies, and evidence-based early learning strategies. Through a child-centered, play-based curriculum, the program fosters creativity, critical thinking, aligns with children’s interests and developmental levels, ensuring that each child receives individualized support. Throughout the school year, children benefit from a holistic learning experience, including academic support, test preparation, and structured time for physical activities, collaborative social engagement, and creative expression.
