OTH 7534 Adult Geriatric Conditions/Interventions with Lab

Following the developmental model, this course is a continuation of OTH 7434- It relies heavily on the theories of practice and tenants of evaluation and treatment discussed in OTH 7434. The course is designed to be a combination of lab and lecture. As appropriate, students will break into the lab to assure cohesive understanding of theory and practice. The class will focus on the study of adult physical disability and its effect on occupation. Students will follow the occupational therapy process for each adult condition from evaluation through discharge and post discharge. The student will develop, discuss, compare, and debate appropriate treatments for those clients in the adult population. As the development of the student continues, he or she will learn to analyze various assessments and treatment plans for adult populations based on the models, frames of reference, and evidence. The learning experience will involve lectures, projects, face-to-face labs, team-based learning, case-based learning, and hands-on evaluation of adults.

The course allows the student to integrate theories into the treatment of adult clients. Students will understand how and when to utilize theory and frames of reference in a variety of service models. Students will integrate skills learned in their previous courses to develop and adapt appropriate intervention strategies. Prior to this semester, students have documented occupational therapy services in a relatively informal manner. In conjunction with this course, OTH 7520 Documentation and Professional Writing is taught this semester. The students will utilize the information obtained in OTH 7520 and begin applying it to a more formal documentation process.

Students will utilize the information and experiences obtained in this course as the basis for both Level II fieldwork experiences and for their start as an entry level therapist.

This course builds upon the courses offered in the first year. It is a continuation of OTH 7434; however, there is a greater expectation of information analysis in this course. The principals of evaluation, treatment planning and the appropriate use of models and frames of reference based on evidence-based practice will be integrated into the adult population. The course relies heavily on development provided by the preceding OT courses which established the basis of normal for which the dysfunction courses are developed. This course is designed to continue the professional development and skill level of the student as he/she formulates treatment of disorders previously studied, based on evidence-based practice. Utilizing the information obtained in the previous courses and the Foundational Principles of OT practice (OTH 7213), the students will design and organize occupationally based treatment as appropriate to the adult population. Satisfactory progress the ASU OT program.
